Wassenberg hosts Ohio Designer Craftsmen show

Artwork includes award-winning pieces by residents of Sylvania Township, Perrysburg

The Best of 2014, work by 74 artists, opens with a public reception at 6 p.m. Saturday and continues until Aug. 28 in the Wassenberg Art Center. It was organized by the Ohio Designer Craftsmen group, and the Wassenberg center is one of two venues to host the exhibit. It closed last month at the Ohio Craft Museum in Columbus.

Tom Muir of Perrysburg received one of 14 honors, the Lonsway Memorial Award for Humor in Craft, for his sterling silver Elegant Gentleman’s Prosthetic Moustache. Distinguished professor of the arts at Bowling Green State University, Muir crafted the lightweight moustache from very thin sheets of metal, the curling and bending of which is quite tricky, he says. It clips into the nose.

Opening reception for a terrific new mural, Collingwood Canopy by Mr. Taylor, will be 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of Black Kite Coffee & Pies, 2449 Collingwood Blvd. in the Old West End. The mural was designed to honor the canopy of gracious trees that once lined Collingwood and also honors the late Robert Brundage, a neighborhood activist.

Art fair aficionados:

● Art on the Mall, the popular University of Toledo Alumni Association event with 100 artisans, music, food, kids’ activities, and a beer tent, will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 27 on UT’s main campus.

At the Toledo Museum of Art:

● Gaming for a Living: The Life of a Pro-Gamer will be a 7 p.m. July 18 panel discussion in the Little Theater. In addition to professional gamers, video-game personalities will speak, discussing the business and lifestyle of the video game industry.

● At 3:30 p.m. July 18, babies 18 months and younger and their caregiviers are invited to a free tour.

Dragonflies and damselflies are lovely, difficult subjects for the camera. Rick Nirschl, who has captured images of many, will speak about how to do it at a free program from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in Swan Creek Preserve’s Yager Center. It’s organized by the Naturalist Camera Club of Toledo. Information: naturalistcameraclub.org.

Call for artists: DK Treasures, a relatively new antique mall in Point Place, invites artists/​crafters to sell and demo their work from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 26. Spaces are indoors and there is no fee.

The University of Michigan Museum of Art will have extended hours, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., July 18 during the Ann Arbor Art Fair. Among the exhibits are Artistic Impositions in the Photographic Portrait through Oct. 19, Contemporary Native North American Art from the Northeast and Southeast through Sept. 14, and Christian Marclay/​Harrell Fletcher & Miranda July through July 20.
