Customer stops robbery at Collingwood Fifth Third

5/11/2001

A man made a botched attempt to rob the Fifth Third Bank branch near downtown Toledo yesterday shortly before closing, police said.

The man entered the bank at Collingwood Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue about 4:45 p.m. and demanded money from a teller, who complied, Detective Tim Campbell said.

When the suspect turned to flee, a customer, whose name was not disclosed, wrestled with the man, breaking the teller's window glass and causing the robber to drop the money. The robber then ran from the bank. No weapons were seen, Detective Campbell said.
