Insurance collector shot in robbery try

7/13/2001

An insurance collector was shot in the hip yesterday during a robbery attempt while sitting in his car in the 1100 block of Oakwood Avenue, police said.

Harvey Weinman, 62, of Sylvania Township, who was treated at the scene, was sitting in his car about 11:15 a.m. after trying to make a collection when the man approached him, pointed a large-caliber, semiautomatic handgun at him, and demanded money. Mr. Weinman refused, police said.

The man walked around the front of the car and fired his handgun through the open passenger window. The bullet went through an armrest on the center console, hit a pair of glasses hanging on Mr. Weinman's right pants pocket, struck him in the right hip, and landed on the driver's seat next to him. The gunman then fled, police said.

Mr. Weinman drove himself to Forest and Grand avenues, where he called 911 on his cell phone.
