Stepfather arrested in W. Toledo shooting

4/30/2003

A West Toledo man was arrested yesterday after he shot his stepson during an ongoing argument about house rules at their Commonwealth Avenue residence, police said.

James Hunt, 51, of 4162 Commonwealth, was charged with felonious assault. His stepson, Jonathan Goldsmith, 19, was in serious condition in Toledo Hospital with a gunshot wound to his upper left chest, police said. Mr. Hunt was being held in the Lucas County Jail pending arraignment today in Toledo Municipal Court.

Police said the two began arguing and Mr. Hunt got a handgun from a closet. As the argument escalated and other family members tried to intervene, Mr. Hunt pointed the handgun at his stepson and fired one shot. A 38-caliber handgun was found at the scene, police said.

Officers sent to the house about 6:45 a.m. found a wounded Mr. Goldsmith sitting on the front porch. Mr. Hunt was standing in the front yard.
