20 juveniles snagged in city's truancy sweep

5/29/2003

Twenty juveniles ranging in age from 12 to 17 years old were picked up yesterday in the last city-wide truancy sweep this school year.

Toledo police and Toledo Public Schools security conducted the sweep, which netted 11 boys and nine girls. The sweep was held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Police Sgt. Tim Layson said one of the boys, a 15-year-old Leverette Junior High School student, was arrested and taken to the Lucas County Juvenile Detention Center. He did not have information on the boy's arrest. The other truants were taken to the truancy drop-off center, 447 Dorr St., where they either were picked up by their parents or returned to school.

Four of the truants attend Jones Junior High and three go to Start High. There were two truants each from Libbey, Waite, and Woodward highs and the Mayfair Achievement Program. Rogers and Scott highs, Robinson Junior High, and East Side Central Elementary each had one truant.
