Boxer-mix dog shot during attack on officer

Toledo police shot a dog after it charged out of a yard on Albion Street, knocked an officer to the ground, and charged at him again.

Officers responded to a call of a vicious dog running around in the 2700 block of Albion and were directed to the rear of 2714 Albion about 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Officer Sam McMurray started walking up a driveway between 2714 and 2716 Albion and was attacked by a boxer-mix dog that charged out of the rear of 2714 Albion. He was knocked to the ground by the dog, which then stopped attacking. When the officer got back to his feet, the dog charged him again, police said.

The officer fired one shot from his weapon, hitting the dog in the head. The dog was taken by its owner to an emergency animal clinic in West Toledo, where it was euthanized. The officer complained of a strain to his left arm. Police cited the dog's owner for allowing the canine to run at large.
