MONROE - A suspect was shot by a Michigan state trooper last night after ramming his vehicle into the trooper's car, authorities said.

The suspect, whose identity was not available last night, was taken to Monroe's Mercy Hospital.

The trooper also was taken to the hospital with injuries he suffered in the crash.

Authorities last night declined to release the trooper's name.

The suspect led Monroe police on a chase about 10:15 p.m. onto northbound I-75, just south of the rest area in Monroe County, state police Sgt. Steven Horwood said.

State troopers later joined the pursuit, he said.

"The trooper shot and [wounded] the suspect," Sergeant Horwood said.

"The shot was not life threatening, I believe."

A Monroe police officer saw the suspect driving recklessly in the city.

The officer tried to pull the suspect over, but he instead led police on the chase that lasted about eight minutes, Monroe police Sgt. James Fick said.

The freeway was closed to northbound traffic while authorities conducted their investigation of the incident.
