METAMORA, Ohio - Two Metamora residents were injured Wednesday evening by a fire that seriously damaged their home.

Charles and Myra Shaffer were taken to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo suffering from burns and smoke inhalation after escaping their burning house at 248 Maple St., said Chief David Sharples of the Metamora-Amboy Fire Department. They remained in the hospital yesterday, but their conditions were unavailable, a spokesman said.

Chief Sharples said fire crews were called to the house about 5 p.m. Wednesday and found the northeast corner of the two-story wood-frame structure engulfed in flames. He said the fire started in the home's basement, and that it appeared to be accidental. The exact cause was unclear yesterday.

Firefighters got the blaze under control in about 20 minutes. Damage was estimated at $60,000.
