TEMPERANCE - Two men were hurt, one of them critically, in a botched robbery attempt at a Bedford Township mobile home late Wednesday, Monroe County sheriff's deputies said.

Phillip Wahl was in critical condition last night at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, where Robert Rosenbrook was in stable condition, deputies said.

Deputies said three men approached a mobile home in the 200 block of Primrose Circle in the Northtowne Meadows mobile home community at 11:30 p.m. wearing masks and carrying guns. After knocking on the door, they told the occupant, Pedro Buenrostro, 31, they were police.

Mr. Buenrostro asked for identification from the men, which they could not produce. The men then kicked in the door and were met by Mr. Buenrostro, who was armed. He fired an undisclosed number of shots, striking Mr. Wahl and Mr. Rosenbrook, deputies said. Deputies did not disclose whether the suspects returned fire.

The men fled in a vehicle driven by a fourth suspect. Mr. Wahl and Mr. Rosenbrook were taken to the hospital by an unknown driver, deputies said.

The vehicle's driver, whose identity is unknown, is at large. The other unnamed suspect was in the Lucas County jail last night. Mr. Buenrostro was in the Monroe County jail last night on charges of felonious assault, felony possession of a firearm, and possession of narcotics.

Deputies are continuing their investigation.
