Fire alarms cause partial evacuation of Holiday Inn

4/13/2005

The top five floors of the Holiday Inn Toledo West in South Toledo were evacuated for about an hour last night after fire alarms went off. There was no fire, but there was the smell smoke near the elevator shaft on the seventh floor, Battalion Fire Chief Brian Byrd said.

Fire crews arrived at the hotel, 2340 South Reynolds Rd., about 7:10 p.m., evacuated floors seven through 11, and cut the power supply to the building. Firefighters failed to locate the source of the smell, but the smell disappeared soon after the power was cut, Chief Byrd said.

Guests and personnel were allowed to return to the floors after the electricity was restored about an hour later.

The elevators were not operable at the time because they had to be reset by Toledo Elevator and Machine Co. Inc. representatives, who were working last night to fix the problem.
