VAN WERT, Ohio - A Fort Wayne, Ind., man was in the county jail here last night after leading Fort Wayne and Indiana State police and, eventually, Ohio Highway Patrol troopers on a chase that ended when his car crashed into a pole at U.S. 30 and State Rt. 49 north of Convoy, Ohio, authorities said.

Brian Kennedy, 36, was charged with felony fleeing and eluding a police officer, operating a vehicle under the influence, and failure to control his vehicle. Felony charges are pending in Fort Wayne, troopers said.

Mr. Kennedy was being followed by Indiana authorities in connection with an assault on a police officer. He entered Ohio just after 4 p.m. A Fort Wayne officer used tire-deflation sticks at U.S. 30 and Route 49. Mr. Kennedy's car went out of control within a half-mile at the entrance ramp to the truck scales and struck a light post.

He was treated in Van Wert County Hospital before he was taken to the jail.
