Glenwood Avenue family left homeless by fire

1/27/2006

A family of three was left homeless last night after a fire of suspicious origin extensively damaged their home at 3309 Glenwood Avenue near Highland Avenue, fire officials said.

Stephanie Phillips and her two children, whose names and ages were not available, were not home when the fire was reported at 8:20 p.m.

A neighbor saw flames coming from the windows of the two-story wood-frame structure, kicked in the front door to make sure no one was trapped inside, and called 911, Battalion Fire Chief Tony Gregory said.

Firefighters found the first floor engulfed in flames, and got the fire under control within seven minutes but not before it had spread to the second floor. The fire started either in the front room on the first floor or on the front porch. Damage was estimated at $30,000, the chief said.

The Greater Toledo Area Chapter of the American Red Cross was assisting the family.
