Bomb squad sent to local parcel service

The Northwest Ohio Bomb Squad was sent to a parcel delivery business in Maumee yesterday to investigate a suspicious package that ended up being an empty briefcase, police said.

An employee at United Parcel Service, 1550 Holland Rd., reported for work about 5:15 a.m. and notified security personnel of a briefcase sitting next to a car in the employee parking lot. The briefcase was believed to have been put there sometime between 3:45 and 4:45 a.m. for an unknown reason, police said.

The parking lot was secured and bomb squad technicians used a robot vehicle to examine the briefcase for explosive components. It was then remotely opened and determined to be empty, police said.
