Area police checkpoints to seek drunken drivers

7/13/2007

PORT CLINTON Personnel from several area law-enforcement agencies will be participating in a low-manpower, drunken-driving checkpoint this evening and tomorrow morning in Ottawa County.

Deputies from the sheriff s offices in Ottawa and Erie counties and Ohio Highway Patrol troopers will take part in the checkpoint, which will be on State Rt. 53 just north of State Rt. 2 in Portage Township, Ottawa County Sheriff Bob Bratton said. He said the purpose of the low-manpower checkpoint is to deter unsafe driving, educate drivers on the danger of impaired driving, and enforce any violations.

Saturation patrols will be stationed nearby in an effort to aggressively combat alcohol-related injury and fatal crashes.

In addition to the impaired-driving enforcement, officers will cite motorists for seatbelt violations.
