Drug suspect found dead in Lucas County jail

An inmate awaiting trial on drug charges died in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center after he was found unresponsive on his cot in the Lucas County jail, said Jim O'Neal, jail administrator.

A fellow inmate tried unsuccessfully to awaken Richard Hogan about 4:45 p.m. Monday. Hogan's sober-living dorm unit was on the same floor as the jail medical unit, so nurses and a physician responded almost immediately, Mr. O'Neal said.

While the cause of death is believed to be natural, a ruling awaits the results of toxicology tests, said Dr. James Patrick, Lucas County coroner.
