A 22-year-old Toledo man accused of a shooting in a crowded North Toledo bar early Friday morning that left one person dead and two others injured is being held in the Lucas County jail in lieu of $700,000 bond.

Granvel Thomas of 3401 North Ontario St., was arraigned yesterday in Toledo Municipal Court on one count of murder and two counts of felonious assault. Visiting Municipal Court Judge Donald Petroff ordered Thomas held on $500,000 bond on the murder charge and $100,000 bonds for each of the felonious assault charges. Judge Petroff set a preliminary hearing for Jan. 8.

Thomas was arrested shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday in a friend's home at 628 Blair Ct. in North Toledo after police received a tip on his location.

According to eyewitness accounts, Thomas was on the crowded dance floor at Hughley's Lounge, 902 Locust St., about 2 a.m. Friday when he and Raymond Garth, 22, of 814 Cherry St., began exchanging blows.

Seconds later, investigators said, Thomas pulled out a handgun and began firing. Garth was struck by two bullets, one that hit his right arm and another that entered his abdomen and struck his common iliac artery and vein, causing his death, said Dr. Cindy Beisser, deputy Lucas County coroner.

Two other people in the club that night were hit with bullets, both in the hip. William Harper, 21, was treated at Toledo Hospital and released several hours later. Katherine Hayes, 22, was treated at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center and was released on Saturday.

Police believe Hayes and Mr. Harper were unintended victims. In an interview Saturday from her hospital bed, Hayes said she bore the suspect no ill-will for shooting her, and accused Garth of instigating the original fight that led to the melee.
