Mother, sister of man linked to Dressel shooting charged

2/21/2008

Toledo police yesterday arrested three people on drug-related charges, including the mother and sister of Sherman Powell, the man with Robert Jobe before the youth shot and killed Detective Keith Dressel a year ago today.

Powell's mother, Tracy Scott, 41, was arrested about 3 p.m. at her home, 922 Buffalo St., on charges of trafficking in and possession of crack cocaine; possession of drug paraphernalia and marijuana, and endangering children.

His sister, Dominique M. Powell, 18, also of 922 Buffalo, was arrested on one count of possession of cocaine. Also arrested was Jamarr L. David, 19, of the same address, on charges of trafficking in and possession of crack cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and endangering children.

They were in the Lucas County jail last night pending arraignment.

Police with a search warrant found a loaded 45-caliber semiautomatic handgun; five grams of crack valued at $500; three grams of marijuana; $148 in cash; drug paraphernalia, and a pit bull.

One year ago today, undercover officers suspected they'd come up on a drug transaction when they approached Jobe, then 15, and Powell, then 19, about 2 a.m. on Ontario Street. They ran in opposite directions when officers confronted them. Detective Dressel found Jobe and, in a struggle, Jobe fired a shot that killed the officer.

Powell was convicted of obstructing justice, obstructing official business, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of crack cocaine, and trafficking in cocaine. He was sentenced to nine months in prison, six months in a treatment facility, and 90 days work-release.

Jobe was convicted of murder with a gun specification and sentenced to 18 years to life in prison.
