A pit bull was found shot dead late Monday on Miles Avenue, near West Bancroft Street in Central Toledo, authorities said.

The incident occurred about 9:30 p.m. in a driveway by a house in the 2000 block of Miles, Toledo police said.

The owner of the dog told officers he was inside the house at the time when he heard what sounded like a gunshot. He then went outside and found the dog dead in the driveway, the man told police.

The case was under investigation. Police had no suspects Tuesday, officers said.

The Lucas County Dog Warden s office and the Toledo Area Humane Society were not involved in the case as of early Tuesday afternoon.

Tom Skeldon, the Lucas County dog warden, said his office was not investigating the case because the dog was already dead when the office was notified.

Sherri Miller, a spokesman for the Toledo Area Humane Society, said the agency was not involved in the case because the dog owner had not contacted it.
