South Toledo man charged in July sexual assault of 14-year-old
4/5/2008A South Toledo man accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in Maumee's Anderson Park last July was arraigned yesterday in Maumee Municipal Court, authorities said.
Evan Gray, 30, of 1360 Kirk St., who was charged with rape, was being held in the Lucas County jail in lieu of a $100,000 bond.
He was arrested about 5:30 p.m. Thursday at his residence on three warrants unrelated to the incident and linked to the July assault by evidence from its scene, authorities said.
A man with a knife sexually assaulted a girl about 9:15 p.m. July 27 as she walked through the park in the 1300 block of Anderson Street near Michigan Avenue on her way home. She was treated at St. Luke's Hospital, authorities said.
TIFFIN - A Toledo man who was one of 17 people arrested as part of a crack cocaine ring operating in and around Fostoria was sentenced yesterday to 10 years in prison.
Marquette Dean, 22, pleaded guilty last week to four counts of trafficking in crack cocaine and one count each of participation in a criminal gang and engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity. Seneca County Common Pleas Court Judge Michael Kelbley sentenced him.
The group was arrested last summer following a two-year investigation by the Seneca County Drug Task Force-METRICH Enforcement Unit.
TIFFIN - A Fostoria man who spit on two police officers was sentenced yesterday to two years in prison.
Seneca County Common Pleas Judge Steve Shuff took the recommendation of Prosecutor Ken Egbert, Jr., to give the maximum sentence to William Toby Mercado, 21, who pleaded guilty to two counts of harassment by bodily fluids, fifth-degree felonies.
Mercado spit on Fostoria police Officers Matt Armstrong and Lucas Elchert Feb. 24 while he was under arrest at the Fostoria city jail.
Mercado had become disruptive because he wanted to be let out of his cell to make a telephone call. When the officers tried to calm him down, Mercado spit on them, Mr. Egbert said.
FINDLAY - A Findlay man charged with robbing and stabbing to death his roommate Sept. 3 has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric exam to determine whether he is competent to stand trial.
Joshua B. Fox, 31, had been scheduled to go on trial Monday in Hancock County Common Pleas Court, but Judge Joseph Niemeyer ordered the evaluation at a final pretrial hearing Thursday.
Fox was charged along with Michael A. Kitchen, 22, with killing Jeffrey E. Harmon, 38, at the East Sandusky Street apartment Fox and Harmon shared.
Kitchen pleaded guilty earlier this week to aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, and tampering with evidence stemming from the incident as well as five counts of rape stemming from an unrelated 2006 sexual assault.
FOSTORIA - Three businesses were issued summons this week in connection with selling alcohol to an underage buyer - in this case, an undercover informant working with Fostoria police.
Police issued the summons to Fostoria Beverage Center, 1327 North Countyline St.; Tri-County Beverage, 311 West Lytle St., and Circle K, 551 East Lytle St.
Police said the sting was conducted in response to complaints.
At locations throughout the city, an informant identified by police only as "over the age of 18 but under 21" made numerous attempts to buy beer.
Beer was sold to the person by the three establishments that received summons and their employees, police said.
