Authorities investigating the weekend death of a man who was found in an apartment in Perrysburg Township and taken to a hospital in Toledo may have died of a self-inflicted stabbing, Dr. James Patrick, Lucas County coroner, said Monday.

Eric Baird, 24, was pronounced dead at 1:03 a.m. Sunday at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.

Dr. Patrick said the "precise mechanism" of Mr. Baird's death was under investigation but the cause appeared to be from a single, self-inflicted wound to the chest.

A final ruling on the death has not been made, Dr. Patrick said.

Mr. Baird was a 2005 graduate of Shelby High School in Ohio, where he played golf, football, and basketball, said Kevin Calver, the school's assistant principal, who was the athletic director at the time.

"He was a great kid. He was a hard worker and a very good student," Mr. Calver said.

Mr. Baird leaves behind a brother in college and another brother who is a freshman at the school, the assistant principal said.

The victim was found late Saturday night at a Lakes at Woodmont unit near U.S. 20 and Thompson Road in Perrysburg Township.
