No arrests in Toledo slaying; police looking for witness

A 36-year-old man shot dead over the weekend in Toledo’s Old South End was a bouncer at an East Toledo bar, those who knew him said.

David Wallerstein had worked as a bouncer for a couple of months at Club 125, the former After Midnight Bar, 125 Oak St., after working as a bouncer for years at a number of Toledo-area bars, Elina Sanchez of Maumee Street said.

Wallerstein, also of the Old South End, was found with gunshot wounds on the pavement at Broadway and Western Avenue, just south of downtown and near his home, after police were called about 5 a.m. Sunday. He was shot at that location, police said.

Wallerstein was shot by one of the three men with whom he was fighting. He was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after, police said.

No arrests had been made in the case as of Monday afternoon. Police were not sure what the dispute was about, Sgt. Tim Noble said. “We’ve got some evidence and we’ve got some witnesses. And we are following some leads. But we are still trying to locate a particular witness,” Sergeant Noble said.

Ms. Sanchez said Wallerstein had been a friend of her husband for at least 10 years and lived at their home until moving out less than two months ago “to have his own place,” an apartment just above the South Side Liquor Box store at 1202 Broadway, near the shooting site. No one at that location or next door to it answered Monday morning.

“He was a loving person,” Ms. Sanchez said.
