NAPOLEON — Two people were killed Saturday afternoon when a minivan and a pickup truck collided at an intersection on U.S. 24 in Liberty Township east of Napoleon, sheriff’s deputies said.

A minivan driven by Forrest Richardson, 45, of Liberty Center, Ohio, was northbound on Henry County Road 11 about 1:05 p.m. and stopped at a stop sign at U.S. 24, but then proceeded into the path of a pickup truck driven eastbound on U.S. 24 by Jesse Quiroga, 49, of Deshler, Ohio, deputies said.

Mr. Richardson was flown to the University of Toledo Medical Center, where he died. A passenger, Michelle R. Schmidt, 38, of Alvordton, Ohio, was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither wore a seat belt, deputies said.

Mr. Quiroga, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Henry County Hospital, where a spokesman declined to release his condition. The sheriff’s report said he suffered incapacitating injuries.

Both roads were wet at the time of the collision.
