Firefighter injured slightly fighting 1 of 2 fires overnight

A Toledo firefighter was injured today while helping fight one of two house fires that happened in North Toledo overnight, authorities said.

The firefighter was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center with a minor injury, said Toledo fire Lt. Thomas Kuhman. The victim’s name was being withheld to protect his privacy, Lieutenant Kuhman said.

Fire crews arrived at 501 E. Oakland St. about 5:45 a.m., by which time all occupants had escaped unhurt, the fire lieutenant said. Firefighters saw flames coming from the upper floor near the front of the two-story wood frame house, started dousing them at 5:51 a.m., and brought them under control by 6 a.m,, he said.

The Lucas County auditor’s Web site lists Johnnie Kimble III of Toledo as the owner of the house. It was built in 1928.

The fire was apparently caused by a faulty air conditioner, according to the lieutenant. The damage estimate wasn’t available.

About the time fire crews were wrapping up at the scene of the East Oakland fire, what was left of another house that burned was being demolished, Lieutenant Kuhman said.

There were no injuries, according to the Toledo fire department.

Firefighters called to 2857 Mulberry St. at 3:06 a.m. found the vacant structure fully engulfed in flames. They brought the blaze under control at 3:33 a.m., the lieutenant said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation. The damage estimate wasn’t available.

Veronica Moxley of Sylvania is listed by the Lucas County Auditor’s Web site as the owner of the one-story wood frame house, which was built in 1917.
