Theater-attack suspect faced eviction

BLADE NEWS SERVICES

AURORA, Colo. -- Neighbors say movie theater shooting suspect James Holmes probably faced eviction from the apartment that, according to authorities, he had booby-trapped with explosives.

Mr. Holmes, a former University of Colorado graduate student, is accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 in the shooting rampage at a midnight movie premiere of The Dark Knight Rises on July 20 and wiring his apartment with enough explosives to have leveled the building if they had detonated.

Neighbors and students in the Aurora neighborhood where Mr. Holmes lived said his withdrawal from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus a month before the shooting probably would have led to his eviction from the building, which is reserved for people affiliated with the school.

Officials at the University of Colorado have said Mr. Holmes was enrolled in the PhD program in neuroscience but he withdrew last month.

Police said Mr. Holmes had been arrested in the movie theater parking lot shortly after the shooting and had told officers his apartment contained explosives.

Mr. Holmes, 24, is due in court today. At his first court appearance last week, a brief procedural hearing, Mr. Holmes seemed dazed and disconnected.

On Saturday, a pregnant mother who was wounded and lost her 6-year-old daughter in the rampage had a miscarriage, her family said. Ashley Moser was among the 58 people wounded at the Century 16 multiplex. Her daughter, Veronica Moser-Sullivan, was the youngest of the 12 people killed.
