MONROE — Authorities in Michigan identified the man who shot and killed himself after a crash in Monroe County on Sunday as Matthew George Bitzer, 33, of Toledo.

Investigators from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office have reported that the fatal shooting happened after the driver rear-ended two vehicles on I-75, north of Nadeau Road in Frenchtown Township, shortly before 10:15 a.m. Sunday.

Deputies said Mr. Bitzer was southbound in a car at a high rate of speed and rammed a southbound pickup. He then continued speeding south and struck the rear of a passenger car. That car went off the west side of the road into a ditch.

Mr. Bitzer stopped in the median, the sheriff’s office said.

When witnesses opened the door to assist him, he produced a handgun and fired a single fatal shot into his head, according to the sheriff’s office.

The driver and passenger in the other passenger car were taken to Mercy Hospital, Monroe, with minor injuries. The pickup driver was not injured.
