MONROE -- Authorities in Michigan identified the man who shot and killed himself after a crash in Monroe County on Sunday as Matthew George Bitzer, 33, of Toledo.

Investigators from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office have reported the fatal shooting happened after the driver rear-ended two vehicles on I-75, north of Nadeau Road in Frenchtown Township, shortly before 10:15 a.m. Sunday. Deputies said Mr. Bitzer was southbound in a car at a high rate of speed and rammed a southbound pickup. He then continued speeding south and struck the rear of a passenger car.

He stopped in the median, and when witnesses opened the door, he pulled out a handgun and fired a single fatal shot into his head, the sheriff's office reported.

The driver and passenger in the other car sustained minor injuries. The pickup driver wasn't hurt.
