A Temperance man was killed Wednesday on Jackman Road in Bedford Township when the car he was driving struck a utility pole, causing a power outage in the immediate vicinity and closing the road to traffic for about nine hours, authorities said.

Jacob Reprogle, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. He was driving alone and was not wearing a seat belt, deputies said.

The car was traveling north on Jackman Road just north of State Line Road about 2 a.m. when it traveled off the east side of the road, striking a utility pole and a small tree, deputies said.

A spokesman for Consumers Energy said 23 utility customers temporarily lost electricity because of the crash.

Utility crews completed repairs at the scene of the crash shortly after 11 a.m., about which time traffic on the road returned to normal.

Sheriff deputies were investigating speed and roadway conditions as likely factors in the crash, deputies said.
