A man suspected in the fatal shooting of a woman today near Southland Shopping Center in Toledo was found dead in a Maumee home just after Maumee SWAT team stormed the home at 1145 Kirk St.

Officers had attempted negotiations with the man at the home in the 1100 block of Kirk Street but then fired off a couple rounds of tear gas. Police said the man, Jashua J. Perz, 30, of the Kirk Street address, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Toledo police received a call at 11:34 a.m. from a woman who said someone was shooting at her while she was in her car in the area of South Byrne Road at Glendale Avenue.

Shortly after the call, she was shot, police said. The victim, Kaitlin Gerber, 20, of Toledo, was pronounced dead at the scene.

About 1:50 p.m., a Maumee SWAT team arrived at the Kirk Street home and began negotiations with the suspect to get him to surrender. A SWAT team from Toledo arrived later in the afternoon.

"It is our suspect from the shooting," said Toledo police spokesman Sgt. Joe Heffernan.
