Lucas County commissioners took the first steps today to hire a consultant to study the feasibility of replacing the 35-year-old county jail in downtown Toledo.
The commissioners' unanimously approved a resolution to release a request for proposals to find a consultant to assist the county to determine the practicality of building a new jail.
Under a timelime announced during a news conference before their regular meeting, the commissioners said they would like to have a consultant hired in early June and have recommendations to review three months later.
The study would look at all aspects of a new jail, including costs, location, services, and how to finance the project.
