1 killed, 1 injured in plane crash near Bryan
4/27/2013BRYAN -- A Michigan man was killed and a second injured when the small airplane they were flying crashed today at a local airport after veering to avoid a collision with another aircraft that was trying to land on the same runway, the Ohio Highway Patrol reported.
Leslie N. Dean, 62, of Ann Arbor died at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center at 1:15 p.m., a little less than five hours after the incident at Bryan Aero Park, troopers at the patrol's Defiance post said. He and Kent C. Hyne, 51, also of Ann Arbor, were flown to St. Vincent after the 2010 model, self-assembled single-engine aircraft crashed, troopers said.
The airplane was attempting to land on a grass runway about 8:30 a.m. when another aircraft appeared on an opposite course, also attempting to land. The Dean aircraft's pilot attempted to avoid a collision by gaining altitude and veering to the left, but the plane lost power and crashed into a field north of the runway, according to the report.
The highway patrol and Federal Aviation Administration continued the crash investigation later Saturday. The Williams County Sheriff's Office, county EMS, and Bryan Fire Department assisted at the scene.
Bryan, the seat of Williams County, is about 55 miles west of Toledo.
