LIMA, Ohio — A Lima man who was speeding through a construction zone on State Rt. 81 near Lima was injured was injured Sunday morning when he lost control of his vehicle after exiting the highway onto Fetter Road and struck a ditch, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

State troopers said the driver Trever Hughes, 38, was clocked by radar going 83 miles an hour while eastbound when he entered the construction zone, which is posted for 40 miles an hour.

Mr. Hughes failed to negotiate the curve where the traffic pattern changed because of construction. His car struck two mailboxes, then went off the left side of the road and struck the ditch. Mr. Hughes was thrown from his SUV as it flipped and rolled over several times. Troopers said Mr. Hughes was not wearing a seat belt.

He was taken to Lima Memorial Hospital for his injuries.

The state trooper who spotted the speeding vehicle had not yet activated his overhead lights nor began a chase when the crash occurred, investigators from the Lima post said.
