Toledo police have confirmed that a second man was injured today in a shooting at a West Toledo apartment complex that left a Toledo man dead.

Nathaniel Vaughn Phillips, 21, of West Bancroft Street was found in a parking lot in front of 1559 Twin Oaks Dr. at 12:04 a.m., with bullet wounds to the chest, and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Toledo police.

Police responded to the scene on a report of shots fired.

Lucas County Coroner Dr. James Patrick said Mr. Phillips was shot three times, including two in the chest and one in the leg, with one of the shots to the chest proving fatal because it struck the heart. Ruled a homicide, it’s the 10th so far this year in Toledo and the metro area.

Police have now identified a second man, Michael Kohlhofer Jr., 19, of Holland, who they say was found inside the apartment with a bullet wound to the rear upper leg, and transported to the University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio hospital. A hospital spokesman said he was listed in good condition late Monday.

A third man inside the apartment during the incident was not shot, police said.

According to witness reports to police, two people knocked on the front door of the apartment, and were allowed in by one of the three occupants. One of the suspects then struck one of the occupants in the head - with possibly a handgun - and then the suspect opened fire, shooting two of the occupants, police reports state. One of the occupants fled the apartment.

Police did not release details on a possible motive.

Toledo police are asking anyone with information to call the detective bureau at 419-245-3142.
