Three people were rescued by the Coast Guard Wednesday evening after their boats started taking on water in the Maumee River.

Just after 7 p.m., the Detroit sector station got a call about a 14-foot rowing crew boat, with two people aboard, taking on water near Promenade Park in Toledo.

The crew team's coach -- the Coast Guard is not releasing names of those who were helped -- got the two rowers onto his boat, which then also took on water, officials said.

A 45-foot response boat from the Toledo station was sent to recover the three boaters and boats, which were all taken to Promenade Park.

It was not clear why both vessels began to take on water.
