Maumee fire leaves family of 3 homeless

Authorities said a mother and two sons were left homeless when a fire of undetermined origin caused between $55,000 and $70,000 in damage to their home in Maumee early Friday.

City Fire Chief Richard Monto reported that the last name of the three victims is Hatcher. He said he did not know the first names of the victims.

Chief Monto said firefighters were sent at 4:16 a.m. to 1102 Rosedale St., near the Ohio Turnpike at the city’s north boundary.

The blaze originated in the basement in an area the chief described as a workshop. The fire was under control about 15 minutes later, but firefighters were on the scene involved in cleanup into the late morning.

The fire chief said the sons are high-school age and one of them has a bedroom in the basement, and it was that son who was awakened by crackling sounds from the fire, the chief said. The boy alerted his mother and brother, and all escaped safely, he said.

The bulk of the damage to the home was to the joists supporting the main floor of the single-story structure, as well as smoke damage throughout the home, Chief Monto said.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
