An East Toledo man who admitted he started a fire in his home that spread to two neighboring houses was sentenced in Lucas County Common Pleas Court Monday to five years in prison.

Timothy Dycus, 44, of 230 Utah St. also was ordered by Judge Ruth Ann Franks to pay $750 in restitution to cover the insurance deductibles for the two properties that were damaged in the Nov. 8 fire. He had entered an Alford plea and was found guilty last month of two counts of attempted aggravated arson.

Judge Franks said that as a college-educated man with a degree in social work, Dycus should be well aware of the dangers of using drugs and alcohol as a person with mental health issues. “You’re a smart guy,” she said. “You can do the right thing if you control your behavior.”
