CASTALIA, Ohio -- An Avon, Ohio, motorcyclist was flown to a hospital in Toledo on Wednesday with what appeared to be serious injuries after he failed to negotiate a curve in the road, troopers at the Sandusky post of the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said Daniel T. Gierlach, 55, was southwest bound on State Rt. 101 in Erie County's Margaretta Township about 6:35 p.m. when his motorcycle went off the left side of the road and overturned near Bardshar Road. Mr. Gierlach, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle.

Mr. Gierlach was taken by medical helicopter to Mercy St. Vincent Medal Center. His condition was not available.

The crash is under investigation, troopers said.
