Toledo pedestrian hit by semi on Anthony Wayne Trail


A Toledo man had critical injuries today after he ran out into the roadway and was struck by a semi with an attached trailer, Toledo police said.

Truck driver Lloyd F. Gilbertson, 65, of Toledo, was headed southbound on the Anthony Wayne Trail at about 7 a.m. when he noticed a man run out of a back yard and onto the roadway, police officials said.

Mr. Gilbertson told police that he started to brake his vehicle once he saw John L. Helton IV, 45, of Toledo running into the street. Mr. Helton was struck by the semi and transported to the University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio, police said. He had critical injuries, police said.

The accident remains under investigation.
