MONROE — Authorities have called off the search for a man who vanished in Lake Erie after jumping from a boat Wednesday night during a fireworks show.

The dive team from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the Toledo Coast Guard detachment, and a Coast Guard helicopter searched the lake near Estral Beach, about six miles north of Monroe, though late Thursday but did not find the man, according to the Coast Guard’s Detroit office.

The man, 36, whose name has not been released, jumped into the lake and swam toward his 8-year-old son, who was in the water wearing a life jacket, but became disabled and disappeared, according to the sheriff’s office. A nearby boater rescued the boy.

The father was watching a fireworks show with his wife, 28, and another son, 3, from their boat, according to the Coast Guard.
