Monroe man killed in motorcycle crash

MONROE -- A Monroe man was killed when the motorcycle he was driving was struck by a pickup truck on South Custer Road in Monroe County's Raisinville Township today, authorities said.

David Leveque, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

Mr. Leveque was westbound on South Custer at Ida Maybee Road about 4:10 a.m. when his motorcycle was struck by a pickup driven by John Poniewozik, 57, also of Monroe, who was southbound on Ida Maybee, according to the sheriff's office. It appears the pickup truck stopped at the stop sign for southbound Ida Maybee and then started to cross South Custer when the crash occurred, deputies wrote in a report.

Mr. Leveque was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to the sheriff's office. Mr. Poniewozik was wearing a seat belt, the report said.

Mr. Poniewozik suffered minor injuries and declined medical treatment, according to the report.
