Toledoan wanted on rape charges arrested in Kentucky

A Toledo man accused of raping a young girl was arrested Thursday night in rural Kentucky.

Robert Tibbits, 37, of 3637 Revere Dr., is charged in Lucas County Common Pleas Court with two counts of rape.

Mr. Tibbits, who was indicted last Friday, was arrested with his girlfriend in Owensboro, Ky., which is near the Indiana state line, at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, said Deputy U.S. Marshal Rodney Hartzell.

The suspect told officials he planned to turn himself in, but didn't.

Perrysburg Township police on Thursday had passed along information to the marshals that they could find the suspect in an Owensboro trailer.

Local police and marshals in Kentucky, with tracking dogs, surrounded the trailer Thursday night, forcing Mr. Tibbits from the trailer. He was arrested without further incident and is being held in a Kentucky jail pending extradition.

Mr. Tibbits' girlfriend, Megan Shute, was arrested on Toledo warrants.
