MONROE - Monroe County Sheriff Dale Malone today issued a statement alerting area residents to phone solicitors who falsely identify themselves as sheriff's deputies.

Sheriff Malone has received complaints in the past few days about callers who introduce themselves as sheriff deputies who are raising money for the Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or DARE program, according to the statement

No officers from his office are affiliated with the solicitors, who, in turn, are not affiliated with the sheriff's office or the Monroe County DARE Board, the statement said.

The sheriff also wrote in the statement that he supports the DARE program.
