Members of the Toledo Police Department help to get an unidentified man to off of the ledge of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Bridge after he threatened to jump today.

A man distraught after finding out he was wanted by police was taken into custody today after an hour-long negotiation on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge.

Police were notified about 11 a.m. that there was a man sitting on a concrete ledge over the Maumee River near downtown Toledo. Police negotiators and the Toledo Fire Department's water rescue unit were also dispatched.

At about 11:50 a.m., the man started smiling and laughing with the two negotiators and he jumped from the ledge to the sidewalk where he was swiftly handcuffed and led to a police vehicle.

Neither the man's identity, nor his prior charges, have been released. It was not immediately clear if the man was taken to the Lucas County jail or to the Rescue Crisis Center.

During the negotiations, the bridge was closed to traffic.
