A Toledo man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg tonight after trying to break up a fight between a friend and others in the 1200 block of Noble Street near Palmer Street, authorities said.

Toledo police Sgt. Bill Wauford said that James Smith, 54, of the 1200 block of Noble Street, suffered non-life threatening injuries. He was transported to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center for treatment.

Witnesses at the scene of the 9:15 p.m. Monday incident told authorities that a man accused a friend of Smith's of stealing something from him, and when Mr. Smith intervened, the suspect shot Mr. Smith in the leg.

No arrests have been made and the matter remains under investigation, Sergeant Wauford said.
