Victim dies after beating at rescue mission

A Toledo man who was badly beaten Saturday in a dispute about 75 cents has died, police said.

Joseph Meyers, 53, had been at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center since the attack at 1917 Jefferson Ave., the Toledo Gospel Rescue Mission. Mr. Meyers died Wednesday at 5:58 p.m., police announced today.

Houston Hart, 49, was arrested at the scene Saturday and has remained in the Lucas County jail since. He is charged with felonious assault.

Police expect murder charges to be presented to a Lucas County grand jury "in the near future."

Both the victim and suspect stayed at the mission, police said. Mr. Meyers was a volunteer at the mission as well.
