Woman, 88, killed by rolling car

NEWPORT, Mich. — A Berlin Township woman was killed Wednesday afternoon at her home when her parked car rolled loose and struck her, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Virginia A. Masserant, 88, of 8455 Chinavare Rd., was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies said she had exited the vehicle with the ignition off but the transmission in the “drive” position, and it rolled backward down a slope, knocked her down, and pinned her, causing fatal injuries.

The accident remained under investigation on Wednesday evening.
