A 36-year-old Temperance man was detained after trying to break into a residence in the Raintree Village mobile home park in Washington Township and leading the 40-year-old homeowner on a foot chase today, township police said.

The homeowner was awakened about 2 a.m. by someone yelling and kicking in into a back door at a residence in the 900 block of East Alexis Road, Detective Sgt. John Van Hersett said.

The homeowner then saw that the intruder used parts of a grill to pry open the door, at which time the homeowner took a bat, confronted the suspect, and chased him until police arrived and detained him, Sergeant Van Hersett said. Police happened to be nearby on an unrelated call and interrupted the chase, the sergeant said.

There were no injuries in the incident, police said. Charges were pending.
