Charges are pending against a 36-year-old Temperance man who was detained after trying to break into a residence in the Raintree Village mobile home park in Washington Township and leading the 40-year-old homeowner on a foot chase, township police said.

The homeowner was awakened about 2 a.m. Monday by someone yelling and kicking in a back door at a residence in the 900 block of East Alexis Road, Detective Sgt. John Van Hersett said.

The homeowner then saw the intruder use parts of a grill to pry open the door, at which time the homeowner took a bat, confronted the suspect, and chased him until police arrived and detained him, Sergeant Van Hersett said.

Police happened to be nearby on an unrelated call and interrupted the chase, the sergeant said.

There were no injuries in the incident, police said.
