2 burglary suspects arrested after brief East Toledo standoff

A Toledo teen and a Chicago man were arrested today after a brief standoff on the city's east side.

The teen, who has not been identified, was taken to the Juvenile Justice Center to be held in detention pending a court appearance.

Luke Short, 26, of Chicago, is charged with aggravated burglary and is being held in the Lucas County jail pending arraignment Friday in Toledo Municipal Court.

Police were called to the 200 block of Plymouth Street in East Toledo at 9:18 a.m. today for a reported burglary.

William Pratt told police he was chasing two suspects who he had seen run out of the back door of his home. Mr. Pratt chased the suspects through an alley – one of the suspects telling another to shoot Mr. Pratt – and to 653 ½ Oswald St.

Mr. Pratt caught up to the suspects and demanded his property back, only to have the suspects run into the duplex, which is where the 17 year old lives.

Police set up a perimeter around the house and, after speaking to Sgt. Kevin Braun, a negotiator, the suspects left the house with their hands in the air.

Garfield Elementary School and Waite High School were temporarily placed on lockdown during the stand off.
