UT police release 2012 crime report

The University of Toledo Police Department released this week its 2012 annual report on campus crime and safety.

In the 96-page Security & Fire Safety Report is data that shows few crimes are reported to police.

In 2012, UTPD responded to one forcible sex offense, six robberies, three aggravated assaults, 53 burglaries, three motor vehicle thefts, and one homicide.

Josiah Galat, 20, of Mansfield, Ohio, was stabbed to death at an on-campus residence hall during a fight with Erik Littleton, 19, of Detroit, on Dec. 19. Mr. Littleton was critically wounded during the assault. No charges were filed; police said the two took drugs before the attack.

The only categories in which crimes increased were homicides (up from zero); robberies (up from one); and motor vehicle thefts (up from zero).

Burglaries showed the most significant fall, from 105 in 2011 to 53 in 2012. Arrests for alcohol violations were down to seven from 12 the prior year. Drug and weapons violations arrests remained steady at two and one, respectively.
