A female officer at Toledo Correctional Institute was assaulted today by an inmate, officials said.

The woman, who was not identified, was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center by Toledo Fire Department paramedics, according to both a fire dispatcher and Meredith Rinna, a spokesman at the North Toledo prison.

The officer's injuries were described by officials as "serious" but not life-threatening.

Ms. Rinna could not comment on where in the facility the assault, reported just before 10:30 a.m., took place.

The inmate, who was not identified, was transferred to a higher-security facility, Ms. Rinna said. She could not say to which facility the inmate was transported.

The investigation is being handled by the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Lieutenant Anne Ralston, of the Highway Patrol, said investigators, as of 2:15 p.m., were still on scene.
